Carnival

 

The Carnival,a popular tradition in Martinique,starts on the Sunday following Epiphany.The festivities reach the peak on Fat Tuesday and the apogee on Wednesday night.The Carnival king known as Vaval, a satirical character representing a politician, a celebrity or an institution,parades through the streets followed by a jubilant crowd.There are different parades each day: Monday is the day of a burlesque wedding,Fat Tuesday is the day of the red devils and finally Ash Wednesday is the day of the she-devils,dressed in white and black clothes like relatives in mourning. On the last night Vaval is burned and all the labours of the festivities are brought to an end.
